Nico’s Portrait Selected for the Percival Animal Portrait Prize

I was recently honored to have my portrait of Nico selected for the Percival Animal Portrait Prize. Even more exciting, the gallery chose Nico’s portrait to appear on the large banner hanging outside the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville. Seeing the artwork displayed on such a large scale is incredibly special.

What makes this moment even more meaningful is that Townsville is Nico’s hometown. Nico’s owner, my cousin Anna, happened to drive past the gallery and spotted the banner hanging in the archway. She later sent me a photo with the message:

“It made my day seeing the banner flapping in the archway of the building! I was driving past on my own and when I saw it I just screamed!”

Moments like this remind me why portraiture is so important to me. Art has the ability to preserve not only a likeness, but also emotion, memory and connection.

Nico is a much-loved black Labrador, known for his gentle nature and loyal companionship. Painted in oil paints, this portrait captures his quiet strength, playful warmth and constant presence in daily life, celebrating the deep bond he shares with those around him and honoring his place within his family.

There is something timeless about painting animals, particularly dogs who become such central figures in family life. They witness everyday routines, provide comfort during difficult times and quietly become woven into the story of a household. I wanted this portrait to reflect Nico’s calm and loving spirit while also conveying the dignity and personality that make him so memorable.

Adding to the significance of this exhibition, Nico turns 16 in July. Reaching this age is extraordinary for a Labrador, and it feels especially meaningful to celebrate him in this way during this stage of his life.

The Percival Animal Portrait Prize exhibition opens on 23 May and runs until 30 August at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville. I feel incredibly grateful to be part of this exhibition and to share Nico’s story with a wider audience.
